Details: Three people were killed and at least 12 wounded in a terror attack in Afula. A terrorist, reportedly wearing an IDF paratrooper's uniform got off the northbound 842 bus from Tel Aviv to Kiryat Shmona during a stop in Afula and opened fire on passers-by. The third person killed was taken to hospital in critical condition and died this evening. The assailant emptied an entire rifle magazine and was able to reload a second before he was shot dead by special police officers in the area. The officers were assigned to a unit responsibile for security in public transportation centers The terrorist wore a red beret but no tags on his uniform and opened fire with a long M-16 assault rifle. One eyewitness said the terrorist looked like any soldier traveling home for the weekend. Police found in his pocket a letter written in Arabic and an orange identity card of the type carried by Palestinian residents of the territories, Army Radio reported.

Details: Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi was gunned down outside his Jerusalem hotel room yesterday, in the first Arab assassination of an Israeli cabinet minister. A retired major-general, Ze'evi was shot three times on the eighth floor of the Hyatt Hotel on Mount Scopus, his lodgings while in Jerusalem for parliamentary business. Apparently ambushed by two assailants just after 7 a.m., as he was about to enter his room, Ze'evi was hit in the head and neck. The radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed the murder, saying it was in retaliation for Israel's killing of PFLP leader Mustafa Zibri (Abu Ali Mustafa) in his Ramallah office on August 27. Mustafa had been behind a series of terrorist bombings.

Raz Mintz, 19, of Haifa and lightly wounded another soldier on Friday night in a drive-by shooting at an IDF roadblock between Dir El-Kara and Ein Yabrud north of Beit El. The soldiers, from the Duhifat unit, were manning the roadblock when Palestinians drove up and opened fire, then fled in the direction of Ein Yabrud. A bullet hit Mintz, who was wearing a flak jacket, from the side. He died of his wounds shortly after. The Fatah-affiliated Al-Aksa Brigade claimed responsibility for the attack.

Details: A Palestinian terrorist fired at a No. 25 Egged bus near French Hill in northern Jerusalem a short while ago, killing two Israelis and wounding 45, one very seriously, five seriously, and the rest moderately to lightly. The terrorist fired from the French Hill junction at the bus, according to eyewitnesses, The Jerusalem Post's Etgar Lefkovits reported. A border policeman, a soldier, and a civilian shot and killed the terrorist, said Jerusalem police chief Cmdr. Mickey Levy. He said the terrorist was 34 years old, a resident of Hebron, and belonged to Islamic Jihad. Police are investigating the origin of the M-16 automatic rifle the terrorist used, he added.

Details: Two Palestinian suicide bombers detonated powerful explosives seconds apart on Ben-Yehudah Street in downtown Jerusalem, killing 11 and injuring over 180. The suicide bombers had laced their bodies with nails and screws in order to inflict as much harm as possible to the many civilians who were dining in the nearby restaurants and coffee shops in Jerusalem's outdoor pedestrian mall. The downtown Jerusalem area was packed with young people at that hour. One eye witness said: "I saw some 40 people on the ground, a lot of blood, all the windows blown out, and everything gone." Shortly after the blast, as persons fled from the scene and rescue workers treated the victims, a car bomb exploded on nearby Rabbi Kook Street. This third blast wounded only a few, but blocked the approach of rescue vehicles making it difficult to evacuate the many wounded.
