The Movement Heading the Campaign Against Terrorism in Israel for the Last 16 Years.
The Terror Victims Association was founded in 1986.
The board of directors includes Lt.Col.Meir Indor ,director;
Dr. Aryeh Bachrach (Father of Ohad); Yochanan Ramti (Father
of Liorah); Rabbi Uri and Judith Dassberg (Parents of Efrat
who was killed with her husband Yaron Ungar.); Rabbi Menachem
Felix (Father of Ofra); Yehudit Shachar (Mother of Ori);
Rabbi Haim Druckman MK (wounded in a shooting attack);
and Yosef Mendlovitz (Former Soviet Prisoner of Zion) in response
to the release of a thousand terrorists by the Israeli government at that time.
The Terror victims petitioned the Supreme
court against the freeing of the convicted terrorists.
Terror Victims Association became a support
group composed of the victims themselves, whose aim was to provide
assistance to terror victims in situations where help was not provided
by government programs.
Unlike the military, where families of injured
or killed soldiers are visited on a regular basis by the unit's
social workers to keep a connection between the unit and the families,
there is no real framework set up by the government to deal with
the families of terror victims. The Terror Victims Association organized
a network of volunteers to visit the families of the victims. Although
the Association does not have the funds to employ social workers
to visit all the families, there are a number of prominent social
workers who volunteer their time to instruct the volunteers
in how to go about their work.
In addition victims of past attacks volunteer their experience to give important
emotional and practical support to families suddenly stricken with tragedy.
This also provides a meaningful and therapeutic outlet for the counselor,
allowing him to use his past hardship to help other victims of terror.
On the political front, since 1986 the Terror Victims Association has exerted
constant pressure on the Israeli government to put the fight against terror as the focus
of the political agenda. The Terror Victims Association organized dozens of demonstrations
against the Oslo Accords and sent Israeli terror victims to Oslo and Wye Plantation, demanding
that Palestinian terrorists be extradited to Israel as an integral part of any agreement.
Presently the TVA has organized a suit against Yassir Arafat in the Belgium International Court for crimes
against humanity. To date, some fifty victims of terror have signed on the suit, giving them the satisfaction that they are
fighting back against the perpetrators of terror.
Due to the rise in terrorist acts over the past year
the Terror Victims Association has unfortunately been very busy.
Support groups are stretched to their limits to try and provide
physical and emotional help to the victims and their families.
The Terror Victims Association cannot
work alone on behalf of the nation. We require the support and
financial assistance of the general public in order to succeed in
our vital work.
The Terror Victims Association:
Visits those injured in terrorist attacks.
Helps care for the victim's children and household needs.
Arranges for social workers to counsel the victim's families.
Organizes social gatherings for the families of terror victims.
Legal battles against the perpertrators of terror.
Organizes memorial services and projects.
Emergency telephone hotline.
Assists in obtaining maximum government benefits for terror victims.
*Please note that Israel's National Insurance Agency, Bituach Leumi, provides generous stipends to victims of terror. We therefore earmark contributions toward projects in support of the families and not to the families themselves, a practice which causes competition and resentment between families when funds are not distributed in equal measure to all.*
